Journal and letterbook of Osgood Carney, Boston merchant and commission agent on voyages to Cuba, Brazil, and Russia for various firms and individuals. The journal is written only from Jan. 1-16, 1831, and details Carney's daily activities and discusses foreign affairs, particularly the revolutions in Europe at the time. The volume also contains copies of letters from 1831 to 1834, to merchants such as William Appleton, Robert G. Shaw, Frederic Tudor, John D. Bates, and James Read & Co. It also includes copies of cargo lists and receipts, and a "List of Vessels at Havre" for Jan. 22, 1834. Ships mentioned in letters include the brig Statesman, the Henry Clay, and the Nera.
